Texas Holdem and Online Poker
Texas Holdem has now overtaken Blackjack as the most popular card game. It seems that the whole world has gone poker crazy over the past decade and on top of the pile is the holdem variation. Texas Holdem is a community card variation of the game and it is really simple to play. See our how to play and rules pages for full details of how to play this fantastic card game. The basics are as follows:
- Each player has to make a five card poker hand
- Each player is given 2 "personal" hole cards
- There are 5 community cards that can be used by any player
- Players can use 3, 4 or 5 of the community cards to make their poker hand
- Rounds of betting occur between each community card being dealt
- Players have to at least match the previous bet to remain in the game
- Those who do not wish to match the previous bet can fold their hand and remove themselves from the game at any stage
- The game continues until all but 1 player has folded, meaning that the last remaining player wins the pot by default, not necessarily because he/she had the best hand
OR
The final community card has been dealt and the remaining players have all bet the same amount into the pot
- This final stage, known as the showdown, requires remaining players to show their 2 hole cards to the dealer/other players
- The best hand wins and that player takes the money

Billīs Poker Tip of the Week
The first thing to do in Holdem is evaluate your 2 hole cards pre-flop. You do this to work out whether to check, raise or fold your hand. Of course the real evaluation will depend on how many opponents you are playing.
Cards will fall into 3 categories.
Hands to raise with are high pairs (10īs or above) and AK, AQ.
Hands to check with are low pairs (6īs or above) and high cards like AJ, and high suited or unsuited connecters like JQ.
Hands to fold consist of everything else, unless you are heads up and you have a hand like 5,5 or 7,8 suited. Or your on big blind with no raisers.

Texas Holdem - Sensible Poker Gambling
There are two main varieties of Texas Holdem Poker, firstly there is limit holdem where there is a pot limit or capped limit that specifies how much you can bet at any one time. Secondly there is No Limit Holdem where you can bet as much as you want at any time. The key to gambling with holdem poker is to gamble sensibly and know your opponent.
Obviously the cards you get dealt are important but more important is to play your players as you will more often than not be able to win a pot without having the best hand. The World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship took place at the Bellagio, Las Vegas last month. This is a very prestigious event with the top 500 professional poker players battling it out to be the WPT World Champ. The final table was whittled down to a heads up between Gus Hansen and David Chiu. With David finally winning the title and $3.5 million.
